I'll try my best to describe Oktoberfest but I'm sure I won't do it justice. It's definitely something everyone should experience for themselves. Our day couldn't have been more perfect and one we'll never forgot...
Oktoberfest started on Saturday the 19th so we decided to wait out the weekend rush and head in on Monday. Tents don't open until 10am during the week so we planned on arriving a little after 9am to wait in line. Dressed in traditional garb (Drew in his makeshift lederhosens and me in my dirndl) the U dropped us off right on the grounds and we made our way in. It was very quiet still... Shops were slowly opening up, pretzel were being delivered, we even saw what looked to be a group of 6 or 7 years olds on a class field trip. We walked by a few of the beer tents with absolutely no line (not what we were expecting).
We decided on the Hacker Feltzelt tent. Their slogan: When surrounded by clouds and stars with a cold mug in the hand, you may feel as though you are truly in a "Barbarian Heaven"
After waiting about 40 minutes with a group of maybe 150 people the doors opened. Within about 10 minutes everyone shuffled in and grabbed seats. We sat down and took in the tents scenery....
Kinda bare right?
A tent like this can hold up to 9,300 people and it's not even the biggest one on the grounds. Needless to stay by the time we left every spot was taken.
We order our first stein of the days, said Prost to each other, and officially started our Octoberfest day!
We started chatting with the table next to us, who from Pittsburgh, and ended up joining them for the next 4.5 hours in the tent.
The tents band started to play at noon and it finally felt like the party started. People were dancing, singing and clincking beers with one another - everyone was just happy. It was a great way to be spending a Monday morning.
Every other minute someone new was standing on their seat to chug a beer while the tables around them cheered them on.
Around 1:30 we decided it was time to eat something - chicken and potato salad was a recommendation from our airbnb hosts. Drew and I demolished it in about 3 minutes.
After one more stein it was time for some fresh air. We walked down the main stripe of beer tents until we came to the carnival rides. The next 3 hours were filled with roller coasters and fun houses.
COMING SOON: In a follow up post I will be sharing video clips from the fun house. Sorry for my cackling in advance but we both gave ourselves the biggest belly laughs on this ride.
Unfortunately our day had to come to an end. With a souvenir mug in hand we said goodbye to Octoberfest. Until next time!
